Teen Suicide Intervention

Why do Teens Commit Suicide?

Most teenagers and young adults deal with the pressure to fit in, be the best academically and impress their peers and parents. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of teen suicide or attempted suicide, but Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statics has shown that it is the third leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults, ages 15 to 24.  Most teens that committed suicide utilize a gun, over-the-counter and prescription medication.

Several factors increase the risk of teen suicide. Bullied and Depressed teens, or those that are suffering from insomnia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, are at a high risk for suicide. Parental separation, financial hardship or family changes can increase suicidal thoughts on teens. Family history, abuse, rejection, sexual orientation confusion, alcohol and drug use, are also high causes on the list.

To detect a suicidal teen, watch out for warning signs including withdrawal, recent loss of a loved one, disinterest in sports and school, warning letters or careless words of wishing to die.

The best help is to keep the communication line open. Listen with a heart, and don’t ignore any unfamiliar changes. For teens in high school, you can help other teens by encouraging them to be in a support group because youths know each other best! You can call (800) SUICIDE for immediate help for a suicidal friend or family member.
